I like social media, but I hate social media
Heads up this blog is heavily inspired by this one (https://herman.bearblog.dev/slow-social-media/) Aka the literal creator of bear blog post and that is way more in depth than mines so I recommend reading that, but you can also read this as well
Recently I started to think about social media again and truth be told I do somewhat like the idea of it. The idea that I can go online and connect with anybody from across the world is insane.
Heck there are social media platforms the I like (But don't use for one reason or another) my biggest example is spacehey it's mimicking old myspace and it's honestly done pretty well though I haven't been on it in like months so not sure how much it change.
Technically speaking the whole internet is kind of social media in a way hell even email is social media.
Social media as a concept is good, key note as a concept in practice we got complete and udder crap. I can describe the current social media landscape as a depression and anger machine and I honestly think I'll be underselling it.
So many features are just designed to keep the user hooked and keep scrolling and it's just disgusting and also sad because social media can be great as a way to meet new people and I do feel that it's possible to make work, but in its current concept it's just slop.
As for how we got here there are a lot of ideas, but honestly I just think that plain old corporate greed is how these platforms got like this these guys want to show as much as ads as possible to the user and in order to do so we got to keep the user browsing.
That is how we end up with stuff like infinite scroll, engagement bots, ragebait/drama, constant notifications, etc
My solution is to just burn it all down completely start over, but this time don't let the out of touch billionaires and slimy corporations in tell those guys to fuck off.
